Who is entitled to the health insurance subsidy in Geneva?

The health insurance subsidy is financial support paid by the canton of Geneva to reduce your LAMal premium. It is not reserved for a few special cases: a large share of the Geneva population is entitled to it, provided you meet the conditions and apply.

The conditions to be entitled in 2026

• Be resident in the canton of Geneva: the Geneva subsidy is reserved for canton residents.
• Be affiliated with the compulsory health insurance (LAMal) with a recognised insurer.
• Have an income (RDU) below the ceilings of the scale: this is the decisive financial criterion.

The income criterion (RDU)

The amount (and the very existence) of the entitlement depends on your unified determining income (RDU), based on your latest tax assessment and a fraction of your wealth. The lower the RDU, the higher the subsidy. Each dependent child raises the ceilings by CHF 6,000. See the income ceilings and the 2026 scale in figures.

Special situations

Some situations follow specific rules or forms. Click on yours for the details:

• Young adults (born between 2001 and 2007): a specific amount of CHF 231/month, application to be renewed every year.
• Holders of a B, L, N or F permit: entitlement open, but an annual process.
• Newcomers to Geneva: a specific initial application from arrival.
• Swiss nationality or C permit: renewal in principle automatic based on the RDU.
• Change in circumstances (job loss, separation, retirement): a mid-year review is possible.

Automatic entitlement to the maximum subsidy

Recipients of social assistance (RI) and supplementary benefits (PC) are automatically entitled to the maximum subsidy, with immediate effect and priority processing.

Cross-border workers and people taxed at source

People taxed at source may be entitled to the subsidy under conditions. Cross-border workers under the right of option (insured under LAMal in Switzerland) may also be concerned. These cases require the right form: our advisers check your eligibility.
